My first experience at Hotel Melungtse was a 9 month stay in 1996-97 when I first began working in Nepal. It was like coming home when I arrived in Kathmandu in March, 2016, and a friend suggested we share a 2-bedroom apartment here. I have now been here just short of a month and am enjoying the comfort of my apartment, the beautiful lawn and garden area that is so well cared for and the renewing of an old friendship with the hospitable owners, Mr & Mrs Kumar Giri.
The apartments are a new addition since my first stay. This one has 5 comfortable rooms including a convenient kitchen with a 2 burner gas plate and lots of cupboards, A small fridge and adequate equipment that really beats having to eat out everyday. However, when you don’t want to cook, the hotel has a restaurant and there are also other restaurants within an easy walking distance.
Transportation (taxis and buses) are just a two minute walk away on the ring road giving easy access to the Thamel tourist area facilities about 4 km away when you feel like mingling with the crowds. There is a large department store with a good food department, as well, just a 10 minute walk away.
Hotel staff is very helpful and respond quickly to requests for assistance. But most of all, I enjoy the beautiful garden and large variety of flowers. In a crowded, noisy city, where green space is scarce, it is a haven to come home to after a busy day – a reasonably priced home away from home.
I love being back again!
